Rain and Soil Test w/ Geiger Counters

This data was collected over a period of time from one of our RadCast readers.

Here is his story:

My name is Greg Adams and I have been traveling in a motor home from my home in Woodland California to Purcellville Virginia, visiting relatives in Northern Texas and Southern Arkansas along the way.  We traveled East via Interstate 40 and Interstate 81 to our Virginia destination. Our plans are to then travel back to California via Interstate 64, Interstate 70 and finally home on Interstate 80, visiting relatives at several locations in Missouri.  Before I left California, I picked up a Geiger Counter and joined RadCast to do what the government no longer does both monitor and publish, background, soil and rain radiation readings.  At each stop along the way, every night and morning I have been taking readings whenever possible.
It was very interesting to see my readings go up as I entered the western states that were affected by by fallout from our above ground nuclear testing nearly 40 years ago, Arizona and New Mexico.  It was also interesting to stand in Albuquerque NM. across from the Museum of Nuclear History and get readings that were nearly twice the readings from home.  By the time I reached Eastern Texas the readings had dropped close to the same as those in Northern California.  I spent a week in Arkansas before moving on.
We stopped in Knoxville, Tennessee just a couple miles from Oakridge Tn. a government site for processing material for nuclear weapons. I got the highest soil readings to that point nearly a half of micro Sievert (.413 uSv/hr) in some undisturbed soil near a COSCO.  While soil that lay nearby and that had been leveled for landscaping was much lower.  However my highest soil reading (.497 uSv/hr) so far were in Wytheville Virginia an area of known uranium deposits.  I am currently in Purcellville Va. and I have been taking shelter all day from a rain that is at least twice the local background radiation readings of the last week.
The three reactors at Fukushima, Japan have been dumping unchecked, an unknown amount of tones of water a day into the Pacific Ocean, and continues to be emitted into the air.  Additionally, we have the lasting effects of Chernobyl, numerous US reactors, mines, processing sites not to mention the above ground nuclear weapons test of the past.  The final slap in the face is the nuclear waste storage site in New Mexico, that had containers and a facility that was supposed to be rated as safe for ten thousand years is presently leaking radiation.  As a final insult shortly after the disaster in Japan our government felt that we the people no longer had a need to see the readings of radiation monitors around the country.  I do this for my grandchildren and yours, we must do what our government refuses to do monitor record and track.

MAY 19

I had some high readings through the last of Az. and Laughland Nv. I believe this may be connected to the fires in So Ca (and brush & trees covered with radiation from Japan) the entire horizon was smokey.  The next morning the sky was clear and readings had lowered.

MAY 15

We stayed two days at a camp ground in a low area with little to no phone service. It rained late at night but had stopped by the time I got up, so I didn’t get any rain reading. Also I noticed my phone hadn’t sent you my last readings from Va. and resent it.  We are taking I 44 back, I misunderstood our return rout. We are on the road in Oklahoma heading west.

MAY 12

Here are my most recent readings. Note that the Eureka readings have all been over 40 until today. I did comparisons in Highridge and a Walmart parking lot (not my choice) to see if they were as high and the weren’t.  But to my surprise the readings in Eureka had dropped that day. I also did a reading in a basement and included it at the bottom.  We are hitting the road in the  AM and will be back in Ca. Next week.

Take care
Greg

MAY 13

I got to see my x1000 (10.86) display on my meter for a total count of 10,860. This was on the first run.  With a high of 1.957 uSv/hr.  We had not had any lightning or thunder in the last two hours for sure and more than likely the last four hours. The surface was wiped down the night before when I did my rain count of last night. I was using a glass deck table placed in the open. This was just before we left this morning so a recount was out. Ugly numbers I have a picture not of highest (656) but something like 580 counts I will mail it this afternoon.
Take care,
Greg
